Glass Design and Art Festival, Glass Quarter, Vilnius
Glass quarter – a social project, which aims to bring back to life the abandoned parts of the old town, create new cultural routes full of unique stories presented in innovative ways to attract cultural consumers and tourism groups. The streets of Stikliai (Glazier), Gaono, Zydu (Jewish) and M. Antokolskio make a block that in 2018 was named ‘Glass quarter’ by the Business and culture community.
This is both very well-known and yet unfamiliar part of the old town, whose layered stories remained untold due to the ever changing cultures. I’m creating the positioning of the identity of this quarter so that it could be rediscovered by residents and guests of Vilnius. It is a very cosy, prominent (it is next to the main streets of Vokieciu and Didzioji) and also hidden part of the capital city with a very rich and unique history.
Back in the 15 th century this place was a goldsmith village, in the 16 th it was home for glass manufactories and in the 17 th century it became the first Jewish ghetto – the reason why for 200 years it was the most active trade space in the city. I believe that my knowledge and experience could serve for the awakening of other spaces of the city as well.
This is how I am changing the outfit of the city. Place making in Vilnius old town quarter is the the first initiative of this kind and I am excited to be able to support it with my knowledge and great effort when making those first crucial steps.
